在用人之前，首先要选人——找正确的人做正确的事。按现在的录用标准，第一关自然是“硬件关”。所谓的“硬件”，指的是员工的出身背景、社会层级等。但晋商并非囿于这些条件的束缚，而是给一些的确有能力的人以一展抱负的机会，不论他的出身地位，只要确定是人才，就一定重用，在人才选拔上可谓不拘一格。其次是软件，包括性格，脾气，做事态度等等。最后还要杜绝关系，本族亲属坚决不用，防止发生不必要的麻烦。
